Midland University’s Walker School of Education (WSOE) offers a Master of Education in Leadership in Teaching and Learning. Masters’ candidates choose between five concentrations, including: Principal Endorsement (PK-8, 6-12, or PK-12), National Board Teacher Certification Preparation, English as a Second Language (ESL) Endorsement, High Ability Learner (HAL) Endorsement, and Classroom and Behavior Management (CBM). The WSOE Master’s program provides teachers, teacher-leaders, and prospective principals with increased knowledge, skills, and dispositions for leadership in a variety of settings, including classrooms, schools, districts, and at state and national levels. Students take 18-21 credit hours of core coursework, followed by 15-27 hours of concentration coursework, depending on their concentration, as outlined below.

Masters’ candidates must hold a valid teaching certificate. Two years of teaching experience is required for the principal endorsement and the National Board Teacher certification. The Principal Endorsement Concentration, English as a Second Language Endorsement Concentration, and High Ability Learner Endorsement Concentration are Nebraska Department of Education approved programs. Depending on the chosen concentration, the Master of Education program consists of 36-45 credits in total.

All students are required to complete the core coursework sequence requirements as outlined above. Additionally, students select an area of concentration (15-18 credits, depending on endorsement area), as detailed below, to complete the requirements for the Master of Education in Leadership in Teaching and Learning.

Candidates may select one of the following concentrations: Principal Endorsement, National Board Certification Concentration Preparation, English as a Second Language Endorsement, High Ability Learner Endorsement, or Classroom and Behavior Management Certification.

A Midland University Master of Education in Leadership in Teaching and Learning candidate will be able to:
1. Leverage data to solve real-world problems and to make informed recommendations for continuous improvement.
2. Critique leadership models, styles, and/or approaches and their effectiveness in fostering positive educational environments.

The Principal Endorsement contains a total of 250 clock hours in the field. Those seeking a PK-12 principal endorsement must complete a minimum of nine (9) additional credit hours specific to the grade levels in which they do not yet have experience, totaling 45 credit hours.

The Principal Endorsement Concentration outcomes are:
A Midland University Principal Endorsement candidate will be able to:
1. Leverage data to solve real-world problems and to make informed recommendations for continuous improvement (ELCC Standard 1.0; NDE Rule 24 Guidelines Standard 1; NTPPS Standard 1).
2. Critique leadership models, styles, and/or approaches and their effectiveness in fostering positive educational environments.
3. Develop strategies to advocate, nurture, and sustain a school culture and instructional program conducive to student learning and staff professional growth (ELCC Standard 2.0; NDE Rule 24 Guidelines Standard 2; NTPPS Standard 2, 3, and 5).
4. Evaluate the management of the organization, operation, and resources for a safe, efficient, and effective learning environment (ELCC Standard 3.0; NDE Rule 24 Guidelines Standard 3; NTPPS Standard 4).
5. Demonstrate collaboration skills by engaging with faculty and community members, responding to diverse community interests and needs, and mobilizing community resources (ELCC Standard 4.0; NDE Rule 24 Guidelines Standard 4; NTPPS Standard 5).
6. Apply the ethical principles of integrity, fairness, respect, and responsibility throughout their program of study and within their professional setting(s) (ELCC Standard 5.0; NDE Rule 24 Guidelines Standard 5; NTPPS Standard 6).
7. Construct strategies to respond to and influence the political, social, legal, and cultural context of the organization (ELCC Standard 6.0; NDE Rule 24 Guidelines Standard 6; NTPPS Standard 6).

Principal Endorsement Options:


Principal Endorsement, PK-8
The WSOE requires a 36 credit hour Master’s degree option that results in a student earning their PK-8 Principal Endorsement in the State of Nebraska. In some instances, students may be required to take more or less than the typical course of study. Questions should be directed to the student’s advisor, who will collaborate with the student to determine his/her/their course of study. Candidates must hold a valid teaching certificate and have at least two years of teaching experience to be eligible for enrollment in this program. 

Principal Endorsement, 6-12
The WSOE requires a 36 credit hour Master’s degree option that results in a student earning their 6-12 Principal Endorsement in the State of Nebraska. In some instances, students may be required to take more or less than the typical course of study. Questions should be directed to the student’s advisor, who will collaborate with the student to determine his/her/their course of study. Candidates must hold a valid teaching certificate and have at least two years of teaching experience to be eligible for enrollment in this program.

Principal Endorsement, PK-12
The WSOE requires a 45 credit hours for the Master’s degree with a Principal, PK-12 Endorsement. Students must complete the regular required course load for the Principal endorsement. If taking the PK-12 endorsement, students are required to split the internship hours across elementary and secondary settings. Students also need to complete 9 additional graduate credit hours to fulfill degree and endorsement requirements and to be eligible to apply for the PK-12 endorsement with the state of Nebraska.

Candidates must hold a valid teaching certificate and have at least two years of teaching experience to be eligible for enrollment in this program.

Principal Endorsement Extension Option
Students who already hold a Master’s degree and have an active principal endorsement (PK-8 or 6-12) in the state of Nebraska are eligible to extend their principal endorsement by taking 9 additional graduate credit hours. The extension options are outlined below:

*Note: This is a preparation program for National Board Certification. The submissions for certification are the responsibility of the candidate. The submissions are evaluated by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards and they make the final decision on certification.

The National Board Certification Preparation Concentration outcomes are to provide students with:

  1. Powerful professional development experiences.

  2. Advancement in the quality of teaching and learning by meeting the highest standards of the profession.

  3. Recognition among the most effective teachers with the highest performing students.

  4. Support and financial incentives for National Board certified teachers in many districts and states.

  5. A stronger resume and portfolio.

  6. Membership into a professional learning community of nationally certified teachers.

  7. Belong to an elite group of teachers in Nebraska. In 2021, there were only 144 National Board Certified Teachers in the state.

The WSOE requires a 36 credit hour Master’s degree for the National Board Certification Preparation Concentration.

*Note: This 15 credit endorsement can be completed at the graduate level, providing the graduate student holds a valid teaching certificate.  Individuals with this endorsement may teach English as a Second Language (ESL) in the grade levels for which they are prepared. This can be PK-12, PK-6, 7-12 endorsement. Candidates must complete a 45 clock hour practicum working with ELL students at the grade level(s) of the endorsement being sought.

A Midland University English as a Second Language Endorsement candidate will be able to:
1. Analyze policies, principles, research, and theories related to the structure and acquisition of language to help English Language Learners (ELLs) develop language and literacy skills (NDE Rule 24 Guidelines Standard 1).
2. Guided by research and theory focused on the nature and role of culture and cultural groups, create supportive learning environments for ELLs (NDE Rule 24 Guidelines Standard 2).
3. Design and implement evidence-based practices related to identification, assessment, curriculum, and instruction for ELLs (NDE Rule 24 Guidelines Standard 3 and 4).
4. Collaborate with stakeholders of the school community to improve the learning environment, provide support, and advocate for ELLs and their families (NDE Rule 24 Guidelines Standard 5).

The WSOE requires a 36 credit hour Master’s degree for the English Language Endorsement Concentration.

*Note: In order to participate, a candidate must hold a valid teaching certificate.  The program includes 90 clinical hours with experiences in primary and secondary settings. Clinical hours must be obtained in classrooms with qualified HAL instructors.

A Midland University High Ability Learner Endorsement candidate will be able to:
1. Design cognitively complex learning environments for high ability learners that foster a love for learning, personal and social responsibility, multicultural competence, and interpersonal and technical communication skills (NAGC Standard 4; NDE Rule 24 Guidelines Standard A). 
2. Execute strategies and procedures to identify learners of high ability (NAGC Standard 2; NDE Rule 24 Guidelines Standard C).
3. Develop high ability learner programs based on philosophical, theoretical, and empirical evidence; and consideration of individual learner differences socially, emotionally, academically, and communicatively (NAGC Standard 1 and 3; NDE Rule 24 Guidelines Standard B and D).
4. Apply professional development theories and strategies in one’s professional setting (NAGC Standard 6; NDE Rule 24 Guidelines Standard F).
5. Evaluate tenets of effective program management and evaluation (NACG Standard 2 and 5; NDE Rule 24 Guidelines Standard E and G).

The WSOE requires a 39 credit hour Master’s degree for the High Ability Learner Endorsement Concentration.

*Note: Educators who provide behavioral services to individuals, families, schools, mental health agencies, and industrial/business settings are likely to experience individuals with a behavioral challenge that interfere with their learning or ability to successfully accomplish goals. In addition to their Master of Education degree, students receive a certificate of completion once they have successfully completed all coursework in this program.

A Midland University Classroom and Behavior Management Endorsement candidate will be able to:
1. Assess the function of student behaviors.
2. Implement evidence-based strategies that promote positive behaviors.
3. Design behavior intervention programs.
4. Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of educational theory, research findings, foundational principles, and relevant policies by creating a positive, safe, and inclusive learning environment for all learners. 

The WSOE requires a 36 credit hour Master’s degree for the Classroom and Behavior Management Concentration.
